Joseph Campbell was a lifelong student and teacher. His book, The Power of Myth, details not only civilizations long past but views of modern day life as well. One of the greatest lessons he taught us is to listen to your heart. In his terminology, he said to “Follow your bliss.” Here he explains how your life works – when you do, indeed, listen to and act on your heart’s desires.
“Follow your bliss. If you do follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while waiting for you,
and the life you ought to be living is the one you are living.
When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in the field of your bliss, and they open the doors to you.
I say, follow your bliss and don’t be afraid, and doors will open where you didn’t know they were going to be.
If you follow your bliss, doors will open for you that wouldn’t have opened for anyone else.”
The fact is that people who love what they do live healthier, more successful and more fulfilling lives than those who settle for and stay in jobs they hate, under stress of deep unhappiness and lack of fulfillment. Failing to move our of the survival, getting by mode into thriving takes its toll.
